The Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane opened in 1860. It was built on a site near Madison purchased by commissioners of the Wisconsin State Lunatic Asylum (authorized in 1854 but never constructed). A Hospital for the Criminal Insane was authorized by Chapter 585, Laws of 1911 under the supervision of the State Board of Control (WIHV85-A2106). The hospital opened in 1914 in Waupun. Its name was changed to the Central State Hospital for the Insane (Chapter 314, Laws of 1917).
